Introduction to eSIM Technology

This course is designed for Technologists and Managers who would like to understand the concepts behind eSIM Technology and how it is shaping the applications being used or will be used because of introduction of this new technology.

GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communication Association) is the standards body that has defined the use of this technology by writing very clear guidelines in terms of three contexts depending upon which device with embedded eSIM  can be used for which application.  So, they defined three models  i.e. Machine-to-Machine (M2M), Consumer or Internet of Things (IoT). They will be in our context in this course.

Going through this course, you will get a good grasp of what is eSIM and how it can be used for various applications that are already launched or are being launched in various sectors of our day-to-day life.

The whole course is divided in Three Sections.

Section 1:   Defining the concepts behind the technology in how it evolved from use of Physical SIM which went through miniaturization phase of Macro to Nano SIMs to save more space in Real Estate of the devices layout. Finally the industry is evolving to eSIM which is embedded in the device and eliminate that Physical slot for the SIMs.

Section 2:   Here we go over the three models defined by GSMA.   (1) Machine to Machine (M2M) example Connected Vehicles, (2) Consumer model examples of smart phones tablets and (3) IoT model example Smart Cities. We discuss their respective Architecture and which applications can use that architecture to provide services to the end users.

Section 3: Whenever a new technology is introduced, there are always some pros and cons as perceived by various stake holders and you will also see some early adaptors to move forward.  We shall cover those and conclude the course by going through design of a real-time applications that we are already seeing in many cities.
